Using QR Codes in the Classroom
In order to make a lesson effective and interesting, a teacher should use some new sources and techniques in the classroom such as visual activities. We will see how a visual activity will engage students in their learning, making it a more relevant, enjoyable and motivational experience.
Quick response (QR) codes have many advantages for a busy teacher such as the fact that they can be created easily and have many uses in the classroom. When we post a QR code, we make students access the information we want by just using their mobile phone’s cameras. Most often, what they have to do is not so complicated: when they scan a code, they redirect their mobile phones to a website that contains more information about the stuff scanned. Thus, the technology for decoding these images requires only a smart phone on which there is installed a QR code reader application.
Why should we use QR codes? Using the latest technology into our language classroom makes students feel that they are in touch with the latest technology. They also let students be actively involved in their learning, offering an interesting way to bring information to learners. Most students have mobile phones and they are happy to be offered the chance of being able to use them in the classroom.
In order to create QR codes, we can use QR Code Generator http://www.the-qrcode-generator.com/ .Before giving the students this kind of worksheets, we have to ask them to install QR BARCODE SCANNER on their mobiles.
You will see below an example of using QR codes in the classroom. You can give worksheets to your students with codes of a recipe and they have to read them and reorder the sentences to write the steps of the recipe in the correct order.
For example, for the Meatballs Recipe, the 9 steps of preparing them are the 9 QR codes below given to students as a worksheet:
Read each of the codes with Barcode Scanner downloaded and installed on your mobiles and then reorder the steps to write the original meatball recipe.
How does it work?
1. Click on:https://www.the-qrcode-generator.com/
The text we want to code should be written on the left and the code appears on the right:
2. Then we save it in our computer as PNG photo, click on Save:
3. Next, we rename it the way we want:
4. It can be copied in a word document like any other photo:
To decode it, we follow the next steps:
QR BARCODE SCANNER is installed on mobile phones (for Android it is checked) then the code is read.
Tasks you will ask the participants to perform:
To check if you understood how QR codes work, let’s try to use them.
After you read all the steps, let’s code and decode some information:
Make a code for the name of your country using
and after that try to decode it using BracodeScanner installed on your mobile
